Dimmer switch hook up, required tools for this project
Black is attached to black. Press a grounding clip and 6-in. How to Rewire a Lamp 6 Steps. Then connect it to the dimmer.
Required Materials for this Project
Some wiring systems, like ours, rely on metal conduit for the ground. Put a wrap of black tape around the white conductor to label it as a hot wire. Most dimmers are designed to handle watts.
Hold the voltage tester to the side of the working cord so that it beeps, flashes, or otherwise indicates that power is flowing--and that it is working. But one of the wires may be white if your house is wired with plastic-sheathed cable.
It doesn't matter if you reverse the two switch wires to a single-pole dimmer.
But test first using the procedure shown in Photo 3 to verify that the wire is connected to a ground. Continue to 8 of 10 below. Lean into it a little and unscrew the machine screws holding the old light switch to the receptacle box. Photos 7 and 8 show how to install this type of dimmer.
With the voltage tester still on, touch the end of the tester to the black wire extending from the receptacle to the light switch. Often, you need to reposition or better organize the wires first to make room for it. If you have one of these systems, Photo 3 shows how to test the metal box to verify that it's grounded. How to Build a New Soffit 5 Steps. Even though this is foolish, dangerous practice, it works because turning off power at the light switch is no different than dimmer switch hook up it off at the circuit breaker please don't ever do this.
To be certain, touch the voltage tester to various other wires leading to the light switch. Calculate box volume Measure the height, width and depth of metal boxes and refer to Figure A to determine the box volume. Turn Off Power Turn off the power to the circuit at the circuit breaker or fuse box. Sign Up for More No Thanks. To figure the minimum box size required by the electrical code, add: Strip new wire ends Clip off the bent end of each wire with the wire cutter. Turn Off Power Step 2: Bend the ground wire back onto the clip and squeeze it down tight so it won't interfere with the dimmer switch.
Check the manufacturer's specifications on the package to be sure. It doesn't take long to replace an ordinary light switch with a full-feature dimmer.
Test for a ground. Unscrew the switch from the electrical box and pull it out with the wires still attached. If it is, attach a short ground wire to the metal box with either a metal grounding clip as shown in Photos 4 and 5 or a green grounding screw screwed into the threaded hole in the back of the box.
